Gulf Arabic Grammar - The
Definite Article
Al-,
usually pronounced –il, li-
or just –l in Gulf Arabic. It’s like
the English “the”, but it’s used more often.
Examples:
li-kwayt
(Kuwait), il-ba7rayn
(Bahrain), il-imaaraat (the Emirates), il-amiir
(the Emir, the ruler)
Rule:
The –l of the definite article is doubled
when before words beginning with r-, n-, s-, z-, d-, dh-,
D-, DH-, t-, T-, th-, TH-.
Examples:
in-naas
(the people), r-rayyaal
(the man), is-sadeeg
(the friend), ith-thallaaja
(the refrigerator)
